Do You Qualify for a Pressure Cooker Injury Lawsuit? Contact TorHoerman Law

Pressure cooker explosions are among the most severe household product failures seen in recent years, often resulting in serious burn injuries and lasting trauma.

When a malfunctioning pressure cooker fails to properly regulate or release pressure, it can spray scalding hot contents across a kitchen in seconds.

These incidents typically stem from defective safety features: lids that open under pressure, faulty venting systems, or inaccurate fill lines that allow dangerous overpressurization.

Even modern pressure cookers malfunction more often than consumers realize, with recalls affecting millions of units from major brands like Ninja, Instant Pot, Crock-Pot, and others.

The pressure inside these devices can exceed 15 PSI, meaning even a small defect can turn pressurized boiling liquids into a catastrophic hazard.

Victims commonly suffer devastating physical injuries, including third-degree burns, permanent scarring, and disfigurement that requires extensive medical treatment.

These failures have led to a surge in product liability lawsuits against manufacturers accused of marketing unsafe appliances or ignoring known design flaws.

Plaintiffs allege that companies misrepresented safety features and failed to properly test products before selling them to the public.

What Is the Pressure Cooker Explosion Lawsuit?

A pressure cooker explosion lawsuit is a product liability claim filed by people who were severely burned after a pressure cooker allegedly failed during normal use.

These lawsuits often involve claims that the pressure cooker lid, seal, valve, or other safety components failed to keep the cooker locked while pressure remained inside.

When that happens, scalding hot food, liquid, and steam can eject from the cooker and cause serious burn injuries.

Many pressure cooker lawsuits allege that manufacturers placed defective products on the market without adequate warnings or safeguards for consumer safety.

What Is the Pressure Cooker Explosion Lawsuit

These claims may involve electric pressure cookers, including an Instant Pot pressure cooker or similar countertop cooker that allegedly opened, exploded, or released hot contents under pressure.

Depending on the case, lawsuits may be filed in state court or in a United States District Court against the manufacturer, importer, retailer, distributor, or other parties involved in selling the product.

Why Pressure Cookers Explode: Common Defects and Safety Failures

Pressure cookers are designed to prepare food quickly by trapping steam and building internal pressure, but that same mechanism can pose serious safety concerns when components fail.

When all the pressure inside the sealed pot cannot properly vent or is released prematurely, the device can violently explode, spraying boiling liquids ejected from the pot and hot food across the surrounding area.

Most explosions occur because a small but critical part of the cooker fails, such as a weak lid lock, a defective gasket, or a steam release valve that malfunctions under pressure.

Many pressure cooker lids rely on multiple interlocking components to keep users safe, but when these parts are poorly designed, worn, or made with substandard materials, they can suddenly disengage while the unit is still pressurized.

Even a minor design flaw can cause catastrophic results, potentially leading to severe burns and long-term injuries.

In recent recalls and lawsuits, investigators have identified repeated safety design issues involving safety locks, faulty seals, and electrical malfunctions that compromise temperature and pressure regulation.

What Is the Pressure Cooker Explosion Lawsuit; Why Pressure Cookers Explode_ Common Defects and Safety Failures

Common causes of pressure cooker explosions include:

  • Faulty gaskets – When gaskets wear out or are defective gaskets from the start, pressure escapes unevenly or builds beyond safe limits, causing the cooker to burst or leak dangerous steam.
  • Improper lid seals and/or locks – A pressure cooker lid that doesn’t seal tightly or whose locking mechanism disengages too soon can open during operation, releasing superheated contents in an instant.
  • Improper ventilation – If vents become clogged or misaligned, trapped steam cannot escape, dramatically increasing internal pressure until the cooker explodes.
  • Faulty safety release valves – A steam release valve that fails to trigger correctly prevents safe pressure regulation, allowing pressure to rise unchecked inside the cooker.
  • Faulty wiring – Electrical issues can cause heating elements to stay on too long, overpressurizing the unit and contributing to explosion risks.
  • Digital indication malfunctions – When display panels or sensors give false pressure readings, users may believe it’s safe to open the lid, leading to unexpected explosions or boiling liquids ejected onto nearby surfaces.

How Pressure Cooker Safety Features Fail in Real-World Use

Manufacturers promote multiple safety mechanisms in pressure cookers to reassure consumers that the appliance is safe for everyday use.

These systems (such as locking lids, steam release valves, and pressure indicators) are designed to prevent users from opening the cooker while it’s still under pressure.

However, when even one of these safety features fail, the outcome can be catastrophic.

Internal pressure can climb far beyond what the device can contain, sometimes resulting in a sudden pressure cooker or Instant Pot explosion.

In many defective models, the lid interlock fails to engage fully, allowing users to twist open the lid before internal pressure is fully released.

A malfunctioning pressure sensor or electronic control can also send inaccurate readings, giving the false impression that it’s safe to open the cooker.

Faulty safety mechanisms like these can cause boiling liquids and hot food to blast out of the unit with tremendous force, often striking anyone nearby.

Real-world use exposes weaknesses that lab testing doesn’t always reveal, such as worn gaskets, blocked vents, or lid alignment errors that develop over time.

In combination, these hidden flaws defeat the layered safeguards that should protect consumers, leaving families vulnerable to severe burns and kitchen-wide damage.

What should be a convenient cooking tool instead becomes a dangerous pressure vessel when the safety features fail under normal household conditions.

Common Pressure Cooker Explosion Injuries

When a pressure cooker explodes, the combination of scalding steam, hot food, and flying debris can cause devastating physical harm in seconds.

Victims are often standing close to the appliance when it bursts, exposing the face, chest, and arms to boiling liquid at or above body temperature.

These accidents commonly result in substantial burn injuries that require emergency care, hospitalization, and long-term rehabilitation.

Even with prompt medical intervention, survivors frequently suffer permanent scarring, nerve damage, and loss of mobility in affected areas.

The extreme heat and force released during an explosion can also lead to secondary trauma.

Impact from metal fragments, shattering glass lids, or slipping on spilled liquids can cause fractures and lacerations.

In the aftermath of a pressure cooker explosion, it’s critical for victims to seek medical treatment immediately, as untreated severe injuries may worsen due to infection or delayed tissue damage.

Burn centers often measure these injuries not only by depth but by the percentage of total body surface area affected, which helps determine treatment needs and long-term prognosis.

Common injuries from pressure cooker explosions include:

  • First-, second-, and third-degree burns – The most frequent consequence of a cooker blast, severe burn injuries can destroy multiple layers of skin, leading to chronic pain and lasting disfigurement.
  • Scarring and contractures – As burns heal, thick scar tissue can form, restricting movement and often requiring reconstructive surgery or skin grafts.
  • Eye injuries – Steam and splashing food can cause corneal burns or vision loss, particularly when the face is directly exposed during an explosion.
  • Nerve damage – High-temperature steam can penetrate deep tissue layers, permanently damaging nerves and resulting in numbness or chronic pain.
  • Lacerations and fractures – Exploding lids, metal fragments, or falls caused by the blast can lead to cuts, broken bones, and blunt-force trauma.
  • Psychological trauma – Many victims experience anxiety, nightmares, or PTSD symptoms after a sudden household explosion, particularly when the event causes visible disfigurement.

Do You Qualify for a Pressure Cooker Injury Lawsuit?

If you were injured by an exploding pressure cooker, you may be entitled to take legal action against the manufacturer or retailer responsible for the defect.

Individuals who suffered burns, scarring, or other physical harm can often pursue pressure cooker and Instant Pot lawsuits under product liability law.

These cases typically allege that the device failed to meet minimum safety standards, either through poor design, manufacturing defects, or misleading marketing about built-in safety features.

A qualified pressure cooker explosion attorney can evaluate your situation, review evidence such as photos, medical records, and product serial numbers, and determine whether you have a viable claim.

Victims may also qualify if the brand or model involved was part of a recall or had known complaints of malfunctions similar to their own.

You do not need to have kept the purchase receipt to pursue a claim, though proof of ownership can strengthen your case.

Compensation may cover medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages stemming from the explosion.

If negligence or corporate misconduct can be proven, victims may be eligible for significant financial compensation for their injuries and losses.

Gathering Evidence for Pressure Cooker Explosion Lawsuits

Evidence plays a crucial role in proving that a defective product caused your injuries and identifying where the failure occurred.

In pressure cooker explosion cases, strong documentation helps establish whether the device met minimum safety standards and whether the manufacturer knew about prior defects.

Without detailed records, it becomes much harder to link the malfunction directly to the specific product or company.

Preserving physical evidence and medical documentation from the moment of the incident can greatly strengthen your claim.

Evidence to gather includes:

  • The pressure cooker itself – Do not discard the unit; keep the lid, pot, gaskets, and any detached parts for expert inspection.
  • Photographs and videos – Capture the scene immediately after the explosion, including burns, debris, and damage to your home.
  • Medical records and bills – Documentation of hospital visits, burn treatments, surgeries, and follow-up care proves both injury severity and damages.
  • Proof of purchase – Receipts, online order confirmations, or credit card statements link you to the defective product.
  • Correspondence with the manufacturer or retailer – Keep all emails or messages related to warranty claims, recalls, or customer complaints.
  • Recall notices or product warnings – Screenshots or printed recall details can help demonstrate manufacturer knowledge of the defect.
  • Witness statements – Accounts from anyone present during the explosion can support your version of events.

What Pressure Cooker Brands Could Be Dangerous?

Retailers and manufacturers selling pressure cookers have faced repeated defect patterns: lids opening while pressurized, faulty gaskets/vents, and misleading indicators that suggest it’s safe to open.

When these safeguards fail, pressurized boiling liquids and food eject, causing severe burns.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued multiple recalls over the last two decades for both electric and stovetop models, while other brands face ongoing lawsuits without formal recalls.

“Dangerous” in this context can mean either a proven defect leading to a recall or a pattern of credible injury reports and litigation.

Potentially dangerous pressure cookers include:

What Products Have Been Recalled?

On August 10, 2023, Sensio recalled approximately 860,000 electric and stovetop pressure cookers after receiving 63 injury reports, including second- and third-degree burns, due to the lids unlocking unexpectedly.

Tempo USA recalled more than 46,000 of its Ambiano pressure cookers on October 9, 2025, after receiving 11 reports of injuries related to the cooker’s lid opening before the proper amount of steam pressure had been released.

On October 26, 2025, Best Buy recalled approximately 930,000 Insignia pressure cookers after reports of serious burn injuries due to malfunctioning safety mechanisms that allowed hot contents to escape.

Pressure Cooker Lawsuits: What is Product Liability?

Product liability refers to the liability of a manufacturer and/or seller of any product for placing an injury-causing or defective product into the hand of a consumer.

A pressure cooker explosion is the result of a defective pressure cooker, making it eligible for a product liability claim.

What Is the Pressure Cooker Explosion Lawsuit; Why Pressure Cookers Explode_ Common Defects and Safety Failures; Common Pressure Cooker Explosion Injuries - torhoerman law; Pressure Cooker Explosion Lawsuit - Do You Qualify for a Pressure Cooker Injury Lawsuit_ - torhoerman law; Pressure Cooker Explosion Lawsuit - Gathering Evidence for Pressure Cooker Explosion Lawsuits - torhoerman law; Pressure Cooker Explosion Lawsuit - Gathering Evidence for Pressure Cooker Explosion Lawsuits - torhoerman law; Pressure Cooker Explosion Lawsuit - What Pressure Cooker Brands Could Be Dangerous_ - torhoerman law; Pressure Cooker Explosion Lawsuit - Pressure Cooker Lawsuits_ What is Product Liability_ - torhoerman law

Product liability claims against pressure cooker manufacturers typically fall into three (3) categories:

  1. Defectively Manufactured
  2. Defectively Designed
  3. Failure to Warn

1. Defectively Manufactured

A defectively manufactured product claim is when the manufacturing process (or assembly) of the product differs from its intended design, fails to perform safely, and causes injury to the consumer.

The intended design of the product is said to be safe, with all possible care was exercised in the preparation and marketing of the product, yet an error in the manufacturing process makes the product unsafe.

This results in the manufacturer being liable for damages.

In the case of a faulty pressure cooker, a manufacturing error may have created weaker lid locks or left debris in the release value of the pressure cookers made.

2. Defectively Designed

A defectively designed product claim is when a product is inherently unsafe to the consumer (and people around) due to an unseen (or ignored) flaw in the design of the product.

The design of the product is unsafe if it fails to perform as safely as an ordinary consumer would expect when used as intended.

These design defects come before anything is even made and often affects the entire line of products.

With a defectively designed product, the manufacturing process is alleged to have built the product correctly according to the defective design and specification.

In the case of a defective pressure cooker, the original design for the pressure valve was flawed allowing for pressure build up, or the lid was designed to not fit properly, increasing the risk of a pressure cooker explosion.

3. Failure To Warn And Labeling Defects

Also referred to as “defectively marketed”, a Failure to Warn product claim involves injury to a consumer that results from failure to provide proper warnings describing potential risks and injuries that may result from use of the product.

These potential risks and injuries are often not obvious to the user and sometimes requires special precautions or diligence in use of the product.

In the case of a flawed pressure cooker, not ensuring the user knows that the contents of a pressurized pressure cooker can inflict serious damage if opened before being de-pressurized, makes the manufacturer liable for any injury resulting from a pressure cooker explosion.

Filing A Defective Pressure Cooker Lawsuit

The civil litigation process requires extreme attention to detail and can be overwhelming for someone who does not possess extensive legal knowledge.

A defective pressure cooker lawyer will need to be able to prove the liability of the manufacturer for any injuries that you have suffered.

Additionally, you will be obligated to show proof of mitigation, meaning that you have made a concerted effort to treat your injuries.

It is imperative to file your claim as soon as possible.

If you wait too long, the statute of limitations may expire, and your claim will become void.
