What is Truvada?
Truvada is used for 2 purposes:
- In conjunction with other HIV medications, it is used to help control HIV infections. The medication is not a cure for HIV or AIDS but is used to treat symptoms of the illnesses, such as preventing other infections or cancers. Truvada is intended to help manage and improve your quality of life.
- The medication is also used for individuals who are HIV-negative and have a high risk of developing HIV. Approved for this use on July 16, 202, it is intended for those actively having unprotected sex, infected with an STD, use or abuse of drugs and alcohol, or are with partners infected with HIV.
It is very important Truvada is taken with other HIV medications, otherwise, it will be less effective than intended as an HIV treatment.
The drug itself contains 2 different HIV medications:
- Emtricitabine
- Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF).
Both medications belong to a group of HIV drugs called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).
Manufactured by Gilead Sciences, the drug was approved for HIV prevention in July 2002.
Has Truvada Been Recalled?
As of now, Truvada is still available and has yet to be taken off the market.
Despite the evidence linking the drug to several serious injuries, the FDA has not mandated a recall of the product.
