1 killed in auto-train collision near W Belvidere, Centre Dr

One person died, and at least one other went to the hospital Thursday in a collision involving a vehicle and a train in central Lake County, reports abc 7 Chicago.

The accident occurred shortly after 12 p.m. to the railroad crossing on West Belvidere Road just west of Centre Drive in Hainesville, which is approximately 49 miles northwest of Chicago.

It’s not yet clear why the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash entered the path of outbound train No. 2113, which was headed toward Fox Lake.

Medics worked to extricate one of the passengers, who was then transported to an area hospital with critical injuries.

The driver of the vehicle succumbed to their injuries at the scene of the collision. Authorities have not yet released their name to the public.

It’s unclear if a third victim required hospitalization.

Officials stopped all trains running between Grayslake and Fox Lake while emergency teams assisted the victims, gathered evidence, and worked to clear the scene.

A full investigation is underway.
