NORTH CHICAGO, IL – A 23-year-old woman sustained serious injuries Friday in a two-vehicle collision along the highway in North Chicago, reports Lake & McHenry County Scanner.

The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on US-41 just south of IL-137, which is just west of Captain James A Lovell Federal Health Care Center and east of Wells Corners.

Police say that the driver of a Nissan Altima was speeding when she rear-ended a stopped 18-wheeler.

Following a lengthy extrication process, medics airlifted the victim to a hospital in Libertyville with critical injuries.

The truck driver did not sustain injuries in the accident.

No charges have been filed so far, but authorities say the driver of the Nissan was likely intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Officials closed US-41 near IL-137 while crews assisted the victim and worked to clear the scene.

A full investigation is underway.
