Minor injuries reported in rear-end crash on I-55 North near MO Z

PEVELY, MO – Two women in their 20s were hospitalized after an eight-vehicle collision that occurred on I-55 North near MO Z on Tuesday.

Missouri State Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 7:15 a.m. amid traffic congestion. The incident unfolded when a 20-year-old man driving a 2017 Chevrolet Express rear-ended a 2025 Ford Escape, driven by a 22-year-old woman.

Troopers said the Ford Escape was stopped due to traffic congestion. Like the Ford Escape driver, a 33-year-old man, driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, also stopped for traffic and was rear-ended by a 2026 GMC Sierra pickup truck.

A 2023 GMC Yukon SUV then crashed into the back of the GMC Sierra pickup truck. Moments later, the GMC Yukon was rear-ended by a 2023 Mercedes-Benz Metis driven by a 24-year-old woman.

A 32-year-old woman driving a 2021 Kia Telluride saw the chain-reaction collision that unfolded and did her best to avoid a crash by drifting to the right, but ended up crashing into the back of an eighth vehicle – a 2010 Toyota Corolla driven by a 23-year-old woman.

The Mercedes driver and the Ford Escape drivers sustained minor injuries and were transported to Mercy Hospital South by Joachim Plattin Ambulance District.

Six of the involved vehicles were either totaled or sustained moderate damage and were towed away by McCain’s Towing.

MSHP has not reported any citations.
