3 adults, teen hospitalized after 5-vehicle collision on I-270 in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, MO – Three adults and a 13-year-old teenager were hospitalized after a five-vehicle collision on Interstate 270 North north of MO-30.

Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the crash at 12:18 p.m. on Tuesday. MSHP determined that the incident unfolded when a 51-year-old man from St. Louis, driving a 2014 Mazda 5, failed to pay attention while driving and rear-ended a 2023 Tesla Model Y driven by an 83-year-old woman from Ballwin.

The 2014 Mazda then crashed into the back of a 2015 GMC Canyon driven by a 41-year-old man from St. Louis. Moments later, the Mazda rear-ended a 2013 Nissan Rogue driven by a 59-year-old woman from Columbia, Illinois.

The Mazda was pushed forward, and its driver swerved on the shoulder to avoid a crash, but ended up striking a fifth vehicle — a 2006 Buick Lucerne driven by a 69-year-old woman from St. Genevieve.

The Tesla driver, the Mazda driver, and the Mazda passengers, a 49-year-old woman, and a 13-year-old girl were all injured. The teenager and Tesla driver sustained minor injuries, and the Mazda driver and the 49-year-old woman suffered moderate injuries.

Mehlville Fire Protection District transported all four occupants to Mercy Hospital – St. Louis for treatment.
