ST. LOUIS, MO – A distracted driver was responsible for an injury chain-reaction crash that happened on Interstate 64 West on Friday.

Missouri State Highway Patrol said the incident happened after 11 p.m. near Interstate 270. Troopers said a 24-year-old woman, from O’Fallon, failed to pay attention while driving and rear-ended a 2017 Jeep Patriot with her 2012 Hyundai Elantra.

The Hyundai Elantra was pushed forward and crashed into the back of a 2012 Kia Sedona, driven by a 45-year-old man, who is a St. Louis local.

The Hyundai driver suffered moderate injuries, while two Kia passengers, a 56-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, from Kirksville, sustained minor injuries.

West County Fire Protection District transported the Kia passengers to Mercy Hospital, St. Louis, and Frontenac Fire Protection District transported the Hyundai driver to Missouri Baptist Hospital.

The Jeep driver, a 17-year-old boy from Weldon Spring, and the Kia driver were uninjured. MSHP confirmed they reduced their speeds for traffic congestion just prior to the crash.

MSHP did not say if they cited the Hyundai driver.
