JEFFERSON COUNTY, MO – A two-vehicle wreck Monday night, January 27, near Barnhart claimed the life of a 77-year-old local woman, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The accident happened on the northbound west outer road of Interstate 55, past Bayberry Lane. It was first reported at about 9:09 p.m.

MSHP officials say a 79-year-old Barnhart man was driving a 2019 Ford Transit van southbound when, for reasons still unclear, the van crossed the centerline and collided with the front-end of a 2013 Ford Escape, driven by a 29-year-old Imperial woman.

The 77-year-old Barnhart woman, who was traveling in the Ford Escape, was rushed to Mercy Hospital South, where she was later pronounced deceased.

The drivers of the Ford Transit and the Ford Escape, who were also both transported to the hospital, serious and minor injuries, respectively.

Both vehicles were totaled and had to be towed from the area.
